After 8 years of marriage and 2 kids, Josh and I have tried many self care products to help us stay calm and focused. I also struggle with anxiety and stress. I love the benefits of weighted blankets, but I don’t particularly like them (more on that below!).

I was excited to learn about the Quiet Mind weighted pillow. This blog post is separated into 2 main sections. In the first part, you’ll learn how a weighted pillow works. The second is my review. If you’d like to skip ahead to my review, click here.

Who is Quiet Mind?

Quiet Mind sells weighted pillows. Its founder, Mikey Goldman, struggles with ADHD and has searched for ways to calm his overactive mind.

Goldman felt the benefits of a weighted blanket but found it hard to move around. So he created the first weighted pillow.

What does a weighted pillow do?

A weighted pillow uses Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) to calm the nervous system. According to Sleepopolis, “deep pressure can also boost serotonin levels, the happy hormone; reduce the stress hormone, cortisol; and increase melatonin levels.”

How to use a weighted pillow

According to the Quiet Mind website, using the pillow is easy. You can hug or hold the pillow “against your chest, across your lap, or even next to you for comfort”.

The weighted pillow will help quiet your mind and move to a deeper relaxation.

I wanted to get an expert’s insight so I spoke with Patricia McPherson LMBT, a Raleigh based massage therapist that specializes in chronic health conditions. Her goal is to help people live and love their lives by relieving pain, increasing range of motion, and decreasing mental blockage and fatigue.

Patricia recommended that the pillow be used while laying on the floor, with your legs resting on a chair at a 90 degree angle. You can read more about the pose here. Place the pillow on your belly, making sure it rests on your pelvis. Breathe deeply with the pillow on you for full relaxation.

Are weighted pillows good?

A weighted pillow has similar benefits to a weighted blanket. According to the Quiet Mind website, their weighted pillow reduces cortisol and helps people feel more relaxed. It claims to provide these benefits:

  • Improved sleep
  • Stress relief
  • Pain alleviation
  • Longer attention span
  • Sensory balance
  • Companionship
  • Grounding
  • Tactile experience

Weighted pillow for anxiety

A weighted pillow can help reduce anxiety by calming the nervous system with Deep Pressure Stimulation. Because of their noticeable weight, weighted pillows can help you feel grounded and bring you back to the present moment.

Weighted pillows also help release serotonin and dopamine, which can improve your mood and make you feel calmer.

Weighted pillow for sleep

Weighted pillows can help you sleep by lowering the cortisol levels in your body. High cortisol levels are caused by stress and anxiety. So the lower it is, the more relaxed you’ll feel and will be able to fall asleep.

Weight pillows are also known to reduce nighttime restlessness, which helps you to sleep better.

Weighted pillow for chest

There are many ways to use a weighted pillow. If you sleep on your back, you can even place the pillow on your chest for added relaxation.

Weighted pillow for ADHD

Weighted pillows can help those with ADHD by using Deep Pressure Stimulation to move the nervous system from a reactive (fight or flight) state to a relaxing state.

Placing a weighted pillow on your lap can also help you focus. Because your nervous system is in more of a relaxed state, you are less likely to get distracted.

I do not personally have ADHD but have friends who do. I showed them the Quiet Mind website and got their opinions. Overall, I noted that people who struggle with ADHD try a lot of different solutions, from medication to weighted blankets.

My friends noted that they’d be willing to try the Quiet Mind weighted pillow as a solution for their ADHD.

A note on safety around young children

As a mom of two little ones, I want to add a quick note on this topic. Just like you should exercise caution with weighted blankets around young kids, the same applies to Quiet Mind’s weighted pillow.

Their Small sized pillow is meant for a minimum body weight of 40 lb. If you have very young children, this pillow is not meant for them to use.

Likewise, I received the Medium pillow size, which is meant for a minimum of 140 lb. For his safety, my 6 year old is not allowed to use the pillow because he’s nowhere near that weight.

Quiet Mind’s weighted pillow for adults

The pillows are available in 4 colors:

  • Blueberry
  • Agave Green
  • Cashew (beige)
  • Chili Oil (dark red)

Quiet Mind offers 3 different sized weighted pillows for adults:

Small

  • 6 lbs
  • 14″ x 14″

Quiet Mind weighted pillow review

The Quiet Mind weighted pillow takes a little getting used to. To give the best review possible, I tried out my pillow in a variety of different ways:

  • I rested the pillow on my lap to write this blog post
  • I hugged the pillow to fall asleep
  • I rested the pillow on my lap and stomach while I watched tv
  • I gave the pillow a squeeze every now and then while I was taking care of my kids
  • I rested it on my lap while I read books to my kids
  • I rested it on my lap while I read my own book
  • I hugged it while saying my morning prayers to help keep me calm

I’ll expand on my experience with each of these in the review below!

My husband and I could share the same pillow

I bought Josh a weighted blanket years ago. He loves it, but it’s very heavy and hard to move. I specifically got him a heavier blanket to match his body size.

I don’t have the same body size as my husband. (And I’m assuming that’s the case in most marriages.) I personally don’t like his weighted blanket because it’s too heavy for me.

Quiet Mind has a quiz to help you choose the right size pillow for you. I took the quiz twice: once with my body measurements and once with Josh’s. The results were the same: the Medium size would be best for us.

I loved that we could share the pillow!

The compression is just right

I loved the compression of the Quiet Mind pillow. Their website suggests hugging the pillow, but I found that it wasn’t even necessary. Simply placing it on my lap or stomach felt so good.

The compression also wasn’t too much. This pillow is meant to be used over long periods. The weight doesn’t feel too heavy, even after extended use.

Actually, the opposite happened: the minute I stood up, I missed the feeling of compression.

It helped calm me down

After a particularly tough morning with the kids, I was feeling frazzled. I was exhausted and feeling down.

I told myself it was ok for my 2 year old to play alone for a little while. I grabbed a book and my Quiet Mind Pillow and sat on the couch.

I felt so comforted. It felt like the hug that I needed. After a while, I realized I was much calmer and less upset.

It can be used as a conflict resolution technique

How many times have you had an argument with your spouse and felt so overwhelmed and upset, but couldn’t calm down? The Quiet Mind pillow is a great conflict resolution technique to use.

It’s such a great and simple way to keep you calm during tough discussions with your spouse. You could even have a mantra you associate with your pillow during conflicts such as “My spouse is a good person. I love my spouse.”

Having a mantra that’s associated with an object will help you remember it better. Before you compromise or forgive each other, take some time to hold your weighted pillow and breathe. Let it calm you down so you can come to a better and more loving resolution.

It helped me fall asleep

I decided to use the pillow one night when I was having a particularly hard time falling asleep. I was getting over a cold and a cough was keeping me up.

While the pillow is larger than what I’m used to, it still felt comfortable to hug it while I fell asleep. I know, given the circumstances, that I would have had a harder time sleeping that night had I not had my Quiet Mind pillow.

Since the pillow is quite heavy, I was curious to see how easy it would be to move while I slept. I fell asleep with the pillow on one side of me and woke up with it on the other side. I don’t remember moving the pillow so I must have been able to move it easily in my sleep.

It helped my husband fall asleep

Josh’s brain goes into overdrive at night. He sometimes finds it hard to fall asleep because of it.

The first night he tried the Quiet Mind pillow, he was asleep in 2 minutes! I was shocked at how quickly he fell asleep.

It helped me sit still

For a while now, I’ve noticed that I have trouble sitting still. Between the house, the kids, and managing this blog, I have a lot on my mind. There’s always something that needs to be done.

I had been trying to begin my day with prayer, calmly and peacefully. But I found it so hard to just sit there. There was this constant nagging in my head that I needed to get up and do things on my to do list.

I began hugging my Quiet Mind pillow and found it a lot easier to be still. I could calmly pray and start my day in peace.

It’s not as hot as a weighted blanket

One of the things I don’t like about our weighted blanket is that it’s so hot. Josh only uses it in the winter because it’s just not comfortable otherwise.

The Quiet Mind weighted pillow isn’t hot at all. I was able to use it with a blanket without getting too warm.

The high price point

This pillow does come with a high price tag. I did a quick search to see how weighted blankets compared and found a few that were just as expensive as the Quiet Mind pillow.

If I were to choose between spending this amount of money on a weighted blanket vs the Quiet Mind pillow, I would choose the pillow. By far. It’s so much easier to move around.

Compression after surgery

I have 2 kids and both were born via c-sections. I know firsthand how good compression can feel after surgery. I wish I had had this pillow back then.

For use with a laptop

I used the Quiet Mind pillow on my lap while I wrote this blog post. I wanted to test out its ability to help me focus.

When I sat on my couch, I found the pillow to be too tall to comfortably place on my lap while I worked. I noticed that it caused my shoulders to be raised while I typed.

But when I sat in bed with the pillow and my laptop on my lap, it was the perfect height. If you plan on using this with a laptop, the comfort will depend on your height and how you are sitting.

Great for when your spouse travels

If you’re like me and your spouse travels for work, the Quiet Mind pillow would be a great asset for both of you. Either of you can use the pillow to help with the loneliness, stress, and anxiety that comes from long work travels away from your spouse.

It’s the self-care your marriage needs

If you don’t take care of yourself, you’ll find it a lot harder to be present in your marriage. The Quiet Mind weighted pillow makes it so easy to prioritize your self-care.

The hard part about self care is finding the time, especially if you have young kids. I loved that I could hug the pillow while my kids played or watched a show.

After my kids go to bed, Josh and I spend time together. Unfortunately, I am emotionally and physically exhausted by that point.

Hugging my Quiet Mind pillow helped me stay calm throughout the day. I wasn’t as emotionally worn out by the end of the night and could enjoy my time with Josh.
