When you first start dating, you reveled in long drawn out conversations, learning more and more about this wonderful person in front of you. After you’ve been married a while, it can sometimes be difficult to come up with good open ended questions for long conversations. We’ve found some great products and ideas to keep the conversation flowing!
No materials are necessarily needed for this activity. While we’ve listed fun products below, you can always look online for questions to start a conversation. However, it’s always nice to be able to put down your phone when connecting with your partner. That’s why we personally like hard copy products to help facilitate this activity.
Why are conversation starters important?
Have you heard the phrase “Never stop dating your spouse”? It’s a great concept. When you date, you actively try to get to know one another. Let’s continue that practice after marriage! Even if you’ve been together for a long time, there’s always something you can learn about your spouse.
Our favorite thing about this activity: it can be done anywhere and at any time. We’ve used the conversation starters below in the car on long road trips, when the kids are playing at home, or on a date night. The possibilities are endless! Keep reading for our favorite products and why we liked them.
141 Outrageous Conversation Starters for Couples
This is made by subscription date night box gurus Crated with Love. Apart from their exceptional date night boxes, they have other great products. One of them is this conversation starter deck. Outrageous is a great name for this deck of interesting conversation starters. Some examples of questions are:
“Have you ever sent fan mail or gotten a reply? “In a zombie apocalypse, what would be your weapon of choice?” “What scented candle would best represent our first date?”

Toilet Tag
When life gets really crazy, it sometimes feels like we don’t get a chance to talk or connect. That’s why we love Toilet Tag. Every page has short prompts/activities for each person to do. It’s a great way to connect without even being in the same room! I got this for Josh after our second child was born. I knew we’d have exponentially less time to connect and wanted to make sure we didn’t lose any opportunity. Let’s just say it’s become a lot more fun to go to the restroom!
Our Moments: Couples
Our Moments is filled with thought provoking, open ended questions. We loved this card deck so much, we bought one for Josh’s sister and her husband. We especially enjoy bringing this on road trips. There’s always something you can learn about your spouse, whether it be from their childhood or their thoughts on a particular topic. Our Moments provides wonderful prompts to help couples discover something new about each other!
Celebrate Our Love: Couples Journal
If you’re looking for something different, this is a great option. This is much more than a conversation starter journal. It includes a variety of activities with topics such as Getting Along, Date Night, Comparability, Co-parenting, and even IRS. Many require each partner to put in their entry. It’s fun to see what your spouse comes up with in this journal!
